Why we wrote this book:

Our Journey with Strabismus

4 years ago, we began a new journey. We welcomed our first born child into the world and as expected, our lives changed forever. But guess what? Our journey quickly changed path from complete joy to a mix of emotions, concern, and worry. Our child was diagnosed with infantile (congenital) strabismus.

If you are the parent of a child with strabismus, then you already know some of the issues and concerns that accompany this condition. What you may not know is where to find the answers to your questions and concerns. You may also be looking for a more comprehensive guide to the emotional aspect of living with strabismus in your family. If this describes you, then this book is for you.

You see, we suspected something was wrong in the first few months, yet it took visits to 3 separate doctors before anyone would agree with us. They initially attributed our concerns to being first time parents and quickly dismissed the issue as pseudo (false) strabismus. The good news is that today our son's eyes are within an acceptable degree of alignment; unfortunately this only came after 4 surgeries, months of worry, loss of insurance coverage (at one point), and many emotional and sociological heartaches (and headaches).

So if you're worried or concerned about what's in store for you and your family as you continue your journey with strabismus, then take a deep breath and relax. You are not alone. Keep reading to find out how we won our battle with childhood strabismus and overcame the emotional obstacles that were placed in our family's life.

Here are some actual photos of our son.  These are part of his 4th surgery collection and were taken 1 month before, 1 day after, and 5 months after his 4th and final surgery:

When we first began our journey, we of course searched the internet for help and resources. We found tons of medical and clinical sites filled with technical and medical jargon and we found several online forums with questions and responses. But we were unable to find any comprehensive stories of other people's experiences; only bits and pieces.

And so we continued through our journey much like others have done in the past. We visited our doctor, understood less than half of the medical explanations he gave us, went home and looked them up on the internet, and still felt empty. Empty because the emotional questions and concerns were still present and we didn't have anyone's complete story to guide us or prepare us for the next step. This was especially true when it came to surgery.

The first surgery was the toughest surgery.. on US.  You'll be glad to know that our son was a champ through all his surgeries and had an immediate recovery after each surgery. In talking to others about this, we've found that this is the common response. The emotional roller-coaster, the worry, the stress, etc. is all on the parents. Your child will actually end up supporting you through much of this journey.

We hope that last paragraph comforts you already.  After all, we are human, we are parents, and we love our children. And guess what? They love us too!
